Orchid cultivation tips for home gardeners

Orchid cultivation has become increasingly popular in Brazilian homes, with over 30,000 cataloged species. To ensure healthy flowering, experts emphasize three fundamental pillars: light, irrigation, and substrate.

Regarding light, orchids require significant brightness but should avoid intense, direct sunlight, which can cause leaf burns. Recommended placement includes balconies or areas using 80% shading screens to provide soft morning sun while avoiding excessive shade that hinders photosynthesis.

Irrigation needs to be adjusted seasonally. During hot periods, substrate moisture should be checked every other day, whereas twice-weekly watering may suffice in cooler weather. A practical method for determining watering frequency is checking the substrate moisture with a finger.

For substrate and drainage, experts suggest that commercial mixes may not always be ideal for long-term growth. A recommended setup involves using pots with good drainage, starting with a layer of crushed stone at the bottom, followed by a mixture of pine bark and charcoal.
