Ordu hazelnut harvest season officially begins

The 2026 hazelnut harvest season has officially commenced in the coastal regions of Ordu, Turkey, marked by a ceremonial opening in the Burhanettin neighborhood of the Altınordu district. The event was attended by Ordu Governor Muammer Erol, Ordu Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Hüseyin İnanır, and Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Bayram Ay, among other officials.

During the ceremony, Governor Erol joined local workers in the orchards to collect hazelnuts and shared a meal with the laborers. Provincial Director Bayram Ay emphasized the importance of proper timing to maintain product quality and prevent yield losses. He advised that harvesting should begin in the coastal areas on August 10, 2026, in the central areas on August 17, and in higher elevations on August 24.

Officials also provided guidance on harvesting best practices, noting that only physiologically mature hazelnuts should be picked. They cautioned against shaking branches to drop fruit and stressed the necessity of transporting harvested nuts to threshing areas immediately and drying them under appropriate conditions to ensure economic value.
