Ordu Municipality tests tropical fruit production in Black Sea greenhouses

The Ordu Metropolitan Municipality has established greenhouses in the Gülyalı district to conduct experimental production of 20 different tropical fruit varieties. This initiative aims to demonstrate the feasibility of growing tropical crops within the Black Sea climate and to provide local farmers with alternative product options beyond traditional crops like hazelnuts and kiwi.

Ordu Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Mehmet Hilmi Güler visited the facilities in the Turnasuyu neighborhood to inspect the progress. He noted that the trials serve as a measure against climate change and are intended to create new agricultural sectors to boost the local economy.

The varieties currently being cultivated include mango, avocado, banana, kumquat, star fruit, tamarillo, black sapote, coffee, dragon fruit, feijoa, mayer lemon, pawpaw, pineapple, white sapote, nashi pear, Surinam cherry, longan, jackfruit, rose apple, and passiflora.
