Đorđe Jokić, 92, preserves Serbian tailoring traditions

Đorđe Jokić, a 92-year-old tailor from Užice, continues to practice his craft, specializing in traditional Serbian items such as šajkača, šubare, and hats. Having mastered his trade in 1949, Jokić has maintained a long career that once took him to Paris, where he worked as a tailor for various clients after responding to a job advertisement while on vacation.

Despite being offered the opportunity to remain in France, Jokić chose to return to his homeland. In recent years, as the textile industry evolved, he shifted his focus toward preserving Serbian heritage by sewing traditional šajkača caps, which have been a staple of Serbian culture since the 18th century. He currently operates a shop in Užice and sells his handmade goods in Zlatibor.
