Ore Mountains: WWII aerial battle over Czech industrial targets

On September 11, 1944, a major aerial battle occurred over the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) during a large-scale mission by the U.S. 8th Air Force. The primary objective was to strike German fuel production facilities, specifically targeting synthetic fuel plants in Ruhland and the industrial area of Brüx (modern-day Most) in northern Bohemia.

American B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, escorted by P-51 Mustang fighters, faced intense opposition from German Luftwaffe units, including Jagdgeschwader 4. German Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighters launched concentrated attacks against the heavy bombers, resulting in several American aircraft being shot down over the region.
