Oregon and UK introduce mandatory school financial literacy requirements

Oregon is implementing a new statewide graduation requirement that mandates personal finance education for high school students. Starting with the class of 2027, the curriculum will cover essential topics such as credit, debt, banking, investing, budgeting, and taxes. This move restores a mandate that was previously removed in the 1990s and was approved by the state legislature in 2023.

In the United Kingdom, the government has announced plans to make financial literacy mandatory across primary and secondary schools, with a new curriculum expected to be introduced in September 2028. Financial advice firm Continuum noted that while the government plan addresses basic numeracy, there remains a need for more comprehensive guidance to help young people manage financial independence.

Both initiatives aim to equip the next generation with the practical skills necessary for long-term financial well-being and informed decision-making.
