Oregon Department of Forestry plans training burn at Bald Hill Farm

The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) is planning a prescribed training burn of up to 40 acres of restored grasslands at the Greenbelt Land Trust’s Bald Hill Farm property. Located near Corvallis and northeast of Philomath, the burn is scheduled to begin as early as Monday, September 14, depending on specific weather conditions.

The operation serves a dual purpose: providing a training opportunity for ODF staff and local fire personnel from the Corvallis and Philomath fire departments to observe fire behavior in grass fuel models, while simultaneously supporting the ecological goals of the Greenbelt Land Trust.

Fire professionals will manage the burn according to a strict “prescription” that accounts for wind speed, direction, temperature, humidity, and smoke management. The area consists of restored prairie with native grasses and flowers. Officials noted that regular fire is essential for Willamette Valley prairies to prevent fuel buildup and protect native plant communities and wildlife.
