Oregon Department of Human Services Takes Daughter from Christian Parents Over Transgender Identity

The Oregon Department of Human Services removed a 15‑year‑old daughter, identified as K. A., from her parents on July 18, 2024 after the family refused to affirm the child's transgender identity. The agency labeled the parents responsible for a "mental injury" and issued a child‑abuse finding on their permanent records.

Mother Nicole Calaway told the Daily Signal the action "destroyed our lives," noting both daughters have since left home and she was hospitalized for a week due to distress. The state also barred her from contacting K. A. After moving to Florida in 2025, the parents faced continued repercussions; the abusive‑finding remains on their records and affects employment and volunteer opportunities.

The husband, David Calaway, was later accused by Oregon DHS of a pattern of inappropriate grooming behaviors while caring for K. A., a claim he disputes. He says he was not notified of the finding until May 2025 and has not been able to appeal. The family has filed a lawsuit challenging the agency’s actions.
