Oregon DOT and PrePass launch mobile app for freight bypass

The PrePass Safety Alliance and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODoT) have launched the PrePass Bypass mobile app statewide to improve freight efficiency and road safety. The deployment allows qualified commercial carriers to bypass participating weigh stations at highway speeds, reducing unnecessary stops and lowering operating costs.

Currently, bypass capabilities are active at 19 sites, with two additional sites expected to be operational by the end of the year. The mobile app functions without requiring additional vehicle hardware or roadway infrastructure, transmitting safety scores, credentials, and compliance data directly to enforcement officers. This allows officers to focus on carriers that do not meet safety standards.

In addition to bypass decisions, the app provides in-cab safety alerts for drivers regarding steep grades, sharp curves, and low clearances. Future enhancements may include warnings for weather events and work zones. PrePass Safety Alliance President and CEO Mark Doughty noted that Oregon’s varied topography and weather conditions make it an ideal environment for the technology.
