Oregon Ducks coach Dan Lanning says team close to national championship
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning told reporters at Big Ten Media Days that the Ducks are "close" to winning a College Football Playoff national title. He noted the program has reached the CFP bracket in both 2024 and 2025 but fell short in the semifinal round, and recalled Oregon’s two previous title game appearances – a loss to Auburn in 2010 and a defeat by Ohio State in 2014.
ESPN college‑sports insider Pete Thamel, meanwhile, predicted that Indiana, now led by head coach Curt Cignetti, could repeat as national champion. Thamel highlighted the Hoosiers’ strong quarterback play and recent success in the expanded CFP format, suggesting Indiana is a serious contender for the 2026 title.
Both comments reflect growing optimism among programs that have historically struggled in the playoff system, as the College Football Playoff continues to expand and increase competition.
