Oregon Governor declares state of emergency after Bend school shooting
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has declared a state of emergency for the Bend-La Pine School District and the High Desert Education Service District following a mass shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School. The October 15 incident resulted in the deaths of three children and one adult, while leaving two others injured.
Under Executive Order 26-28, the state is mobilizing multiple agencies to support recovery efforts. The Oregon Department of Education will assist with federal recovery grant applications, such as Project SERV, while the Oregon Employment Department will help staff access Paid Leave Oregon benefits. Additionally, the Oregon State Police will expedite background checks for crisis counselors and substitute teachers.
In response to the tragedy, Governor Kotek indicated the state will review firearm access for individuals under 18 and safe gun storage practices. She also noted that an independent review of the shooting is under consideration and that the state is evaluating the implementation of school resource officers.
