Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and Christine Drazan hold first gubernatorial debate

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and Republican challenger State Senator Christine Drazan participated in their first televised gubernatorial debate at the University of Oregon in Eugene. The candidates exchanged sharp criticisms regarding their respective records and political philosophies.

Drazan accused Kotek of being a “power-hungry spender” who has failed to address critical issues such as homelessness, mental health, education, and economic development. She also criticized the incumbent for frequently attributing state issues to the federal administration. In response, Kotek accused Drazan of distorting the truth and failing to hold corporations and federal authorities accountable.

The debate also touched on voting methods. Kotek expressed support for the current system, while Drazan advocated for a return to in-person polling booths, noting her previous sponsorship of legislation aimed at making in-person voting the primary method.

Recent polling indicates a highly competitive race. A DHM Research poll for Oregon Public Broadcasting placed Drazan ahead of Kotek by 47% to 46%, a margin within the error of margin. The race is the first of three scheduled debates for the 2026 election cycle.
