Oregon gubernatorial candidates to debate amid record $10 million campaign contribution

Oregon’s gubernatorial race between incumbent Democrat Tina Kotek and Republican challenger Christine Drazan is intensifying as the candidates prepare for their first debate on October 1. The debate will be hosted by the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication and broadcast by KVAL.

Recent polling from DHM Research indicates a tight contest, with Drazan leading Kotek 45% to 43%, within a 4% margin of error.

Adding to the political tension is a record-breaking $10 million contribution made on September 16 by a California carpenters union to an affiliated Oregon political action committee, Building a Stronger Oregon. This transaction more than doubles the previous largest individual transaction in Oregon’s electronic campaign filing history. While the PAC has already distributed funds to Kotek and various Democratic candidates, the ultimate destination of the remaining millions remains unclear.
