Oregon hospital financial aid increases under new state law

Following the implementation of a sweeping law in July 2024, Oregon hospitals have significantly increased financial assistance to patients. The legislation requires hospitals to proactively screen patients for eligibility, effectively bypassing the traditional application process for most individuals.

At Oregon Health & Science University, the percentage of patients qualifying for financial assistance rose from 12% to 64% in the months following the law's enactment. On average, spending on financial assistance by approximately two-thirds of the state's hospitals more than doubled during their first full fiscal year under the new regulations.

While patient advocates praise the move for providing direct relief from medical costs, some hospitals have expressed concerns. Providers have cited the need for better screening tools and noted potential financial strain resulting from federal policy shifts and projected Medicaid cuts.
