Oregon projected to miss transportation emissions goals

Oregon is currently projected to achieve only a 10% reduction in transportation greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, falling significantly short of the state's goal to reach 80% below 1990 levels.

State officials informed the Oregon Transportation Commission that progress has stalled due to state-level funding uncertainty and changes in federal policy. Specifically, officials cited the elimination of electric vehicle tax incentives, funding for charging infrastructure, and emission standards under the Trump administration as key setbacks.

The transportation sector accounts for 35% of Oregon's total greenhouse gas emissions. Officials noted that failing to curb these emissions contributes to extreme weather events, such as flooding, wildfires, and coastal erosion, which in turn impact the state's transportation infrastructure.
