Oregon psilocybin program linked to improved mental health outcomes
A study published in JAMA Network Open regarding Oregon’s state-regulated psilocybin program indicates significant improvements in mental health outcomes for participants. Researchers followed 346 adults who received psilocybin services at licensed centers between November 2024 and March 2026.
Findings showed a substantial decline in moderate-to-severe symptoms: depression fell from 42.2% to 16.5%, anxiety from 45.1% to 13.2%, and PTSD symptoms from 48% to 16.8%. Participants also reported increased life satisfaction, with the percentage of those satisfied with their lives rising from 63% to over 82% within three months.
Regarding safety, the study described the program as generally safe. Serious adverse reactions were uncommon, occurring in approximately 1.2% of participants (four individuals) who required medical attention for behavioral reactions. Many participants described the experience as highly meaningful, with nearly 59% ranking it among the top ten most significant experiences of their lives.
