Oregon school shooting weapon was birthday gift from mother

The shotgun used in the recent shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, was a birthday gift from the shooter's mother, according to sources. The weapon, a Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun, was purchased legally in August 2026 by Shauntai Nickerson and given to her 16-year-old son, Griffin J. John II, for recreational use.

The attack resulted in the deaths of four people: 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert and three children aged 5, 8, and 11. The 5-year-old victim has been identified as Rhoam Summer. Two other individuals, a 7-year-old girl and a 54-year-old teacher, were wounded during the incident.

Police reported that the shooter initially fired at a passing pickup truck before entering the school by shooting through the glass panes of double doors. He then entered a classroom where the fatalities occurred.
