Oregon teacher recounts survival of Silver Rail Elementary shooting

Becky Drury, a teacher injured during the October 15 shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has released a statement detailing her experience. Drury, 54, stated that she attempted to return to her classroom to secure the door after hearing commotion outside, but the gunman was already present. She reported being shot at close range, resulting in severe injuries to her right arm and a left hand that was nearly severed. To survive, she said she pretended to be dead in hopes the attacker would not shoot her again.

Drury also sought to correct previous media reports suggesting she had thrown herself on top of a student to protect them, clarifying that she was shot before she had any opportunity to act.

The attack, carried out by 16-year-old former student Griffin J. John II using a shotgun, resulted in the deaths of three children, aged 5, 8, and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher, Megan Lambert. A 7-year-old student was also critically injured. The gunman was fatally shot by an armed bystander, Kaylub Giamanco, who entered the building following the suspect.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the motive, including examining the suspect's electronic devices and social media for potential links to extremist material. Bend Police confirmed the shotgun used in the attack was purchased legally.
