Oreste Benzi: Legacy of the Pope John XXIII Community founder

On the anniversary of his birth, the life and legacy of Father Oreste Benzi, founder of the Pope John XXIII Community, are being commemorated. Born on September 7, 1925, in the Rimini countryside, Benzi dedicated his priesthood to serving marginalized populations, including adolescents, people with disabilities, inmates, drug addicts, and victims of human trafficking.

Benzi's work was characterized by a direct, Gospel-rooted approach to social inclusion. In 1961, he established the 'Madonna delle Vette' holiday home in Alba di Canazei, which became a significant site for fostering shared living experiences between youth and individuals with physical and mental disabilities. His initiatives led to the creation of various family homes and a community that now operates in multiple countries.

Monsignor Francesco Lambiasi, Bishop Emeritus of Rimini, has reflected on Benzi's multifaceted impact, describing him as a social operator, educator, and pastor whose work continues to challenge both the Church and society regarding the inherent dignity of every person.
