ORF leadership election sparks calls for independence from politics

More than 30,000 Austrians have signed a petition demanding that the public broadcaster ORF be freed from partisan influence ahead of the Foundation Council's vote on June 11 to appoint the next director‑general. Survey responses gathered in a "ORF‑Kummerkasten" show a clear demand for "politics out of the ORF" and for a reform of the Foundation Council to include independent experts and transparent decision‑making.

On a televised debate on ORF III, seven candidates presented their visions. Several emphasized a "democratic centre" newsroom, stronger investigative journalism and a public‑value principle. Others called for digital upgrades, more regional and youth‑focused content, and greater financial transparency. None of the candidates announced major surprises, but all stressed the need to keep the broadcaster independent from party politics and to restore public trust.

The public discussion reflects broader concerns about recent scandals at ORF, with calls for clearer salary disclosures, accountability for misuse of public funds, and a stronger role for independent journalism in countering misinformation.
