ORF leadership overhaul and deep budget cuts spark media reform debate in Austria

Austrian public broadcaster ORF is set to appoint a new director team under incoming General Director Clemens Pig, who has delayed the selection to ensure independence from party politics. The recruitment process now involves external consultants from Germany and Switzerland, with an emphasis on professional experience and a target that half the positions be filled by women.

At the same time, the ORF Foundation Council, chaired by Heinz Lederer, warned that the broadcaster faces a “five past twelve” situation as the government plans to cut €90 million from its annual budget. Lederer called for further reductions, including trimming top‑salary staff and tightening advertising policies, to preserve the public service mission amid competition from private and tech media.

Both leaders acknowledge the urgency of restoring financial stability while maintaining ORF’s programming quality, with upcoming discussions at a media‑policy forum in September and a possible request to increase the licence fee under a special emergency clause.
