European quiz shows face different fates as RTL returns and ORF faces cuts
The German quiz show ‘Wer wird Millionär?’ is returning to RTL for its 28th season following a four-month summer break. The long-running program, which has aired since 1999, will continue to be hosted by 70-year-old Günther Jauch. The show maintains its traditional format, featuring 15 questions and three lifelines: 50:50, the audience lifeline, and the telephone lifeline.
In contrast, the Austrian ORF quiz show ‘Millionenshow’ faces an uncertain future. Reports suggest the program could be discontinued in 2027 due to high production costs, estimated at approximately 200,000 euros per episode. Host Armin Assinger, who has led the show since 2002, confirmed that while the program is secured through 2027, its long-term survival remains undecided as the broadcaster evaluates its programming budget.
