ORF moves toward appointing new General Director amid staff cuts

Austria’s public broadcaster ORF is winding up the selection process for its next General Director, slated to start in 2027. Thirteen candidates passed the initial screening by the foundation council, with a shortlist that includes outgoing APA chief Clemens Pig, former ProSiebenSat.1 executive Markus Breitenecker and streaming specialist Johannes Larcher. The finalists presented their programmes in three rounds, emphasizing Austrian‑focused content, younger audiences and a regional programming boost.

Ahead of the foundation‑council hearing on 11 June, the ORF editorial board opened an internal poll, allowing journalists to voice which candidates they consider best for the broadcaster’s future. The poll, running until mid‑week, is intended as a mood gauge rather than a binding vote.

At the same time, ORF faces a governmental budget plan that could cut up to €90 million, forcing the dismissal of an estimated 300‑400 employees. The leadership transition, the journalists’ vote and the looming staff reductions are shaping a pivotal moment for Austria’s media landscape.
