Organ donation advances in Chile and Argentina

In La Serena, Chile, a second organ procurement of the year was carried out after a donor’s family consented, providing new transplant opportunities for patients on the waiting list of more than 2,200 people. Nurse Sara Palta, supervisor of the critical patient unit, described the process as “very moving” and highlighted the coordinated effort among hospital units.

In Argentina, the National Institute Central Único Coordinador de Ablación e Implante (Incucai) approved a national protocol for normothermic regional perfusion (PRN) in controlled asystole donation. The resolution establishes guidelines, donor and recipient criteria, technical requirements, and training obligations to increase the availability of viable organs, with the Federal Transplant Commission (COFETRA) providing advisory support.
