Organ donation awareness initiatives launched in France

To mark World Organ Donation and Transplantation Day on October 17, awareness initiatives in France are emphasizing the importance of discussing donation preferences with family members.

In France, all adults are presumed organ donors unless they have officially registered a refusal. However, medical teams often face challenges when relatives oppose a donation during moments of intense grief, even if the deceased had not expressed a formal refusal. Experts note that in approximately 40% of cases, relatives oppose donation because they never discussed the subject with their loved one.

The AMFE (Association Française pour la Médecine de Transplantation) has launched new awareness tools, including illustrated cards designed to integrate the topic into everyday conversations. These materials aim to encourage people of all ages, including youth, to communicate their wishes to ensure their decisions are respected and to help save lives through transplantation.
