Medical advancements highlight organ donation and xenotransplantation breakthroughs

Medical advancements and organ donation efforts are seeing significant activity across the Americas. In Mexico, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has successfully completed multiple multi-organ procurements in Yucatán and Sonora, benefiting dozens of patients through the distribution of kidneys, livers, and corneas to various states.

In Peru, EsSalud reported a successful multi-organ operation involving a heart, liver, kidneys, and corneas, while the National Institute of Child Health (INSN San Borja) issued an urgent call for blood and platelet donations to support pediatric surgeries and transplants. Argentina also reported a milestone in Tucumán, where a patient successfully completed a bone marrow transplant under the Incluir Salud program.

On the frontier of medical science, researchers at Mass General Brigham published findings in The Lancet regarding a breakthrough in xenotransplantation. A 66-year-old patient successfully lived for 271 days without dialysis using a genetically modified pig kidney, which served as a vital bridge until a human kidney transplant could be performed. This achievement utilized CRISPR-Cas9 technology to minimize immune rejection.
