Organ donation in Andalusia hits record levels in Huelva and Almería

In the province of Huelva, 37 organ and tissue donations were recorded in 2025, enabling 63 transplants that saved or significantly improved lives. The donation rate reached 56.6 donors per million inhabitants, above the Andalusian (54.4) and national (51.9) averages. Hospital Universitario Juan Ramón Jiménez managed 24 donations, resulting in 30 kidney, 10 liver, seven lung, three heart and one pancreas transplant, benefiting 51 patients. Hospital de Riotinto contributed 13 donations, including six multiorgan procedures, and reported a rapid increase in early 2026 with nine donations in five months.

Meanwhile, Almería’s Hospital Universitario Torrecárdenas reported 31 organ and 46 tissue donations over the past year, with a family‑rejection rate of just 4%, a notable drop from typical levels. The centre achieved a historic 40 donations in 2024. The national transplant system recorded 6,334 transplants in 2025 from 2,547 deceased donors and 408 living donors, underscoring Spain’s leading role in organ donation. Both provinces highlighted the impact of public awareness campaigns and education on maintaining and boosting donation rates.
