Organ donation rates hindered by family refusal in Chile and Argentina

Organ donation processes face significant hurdles due to family refusal and systemic challenges in South America. In Chile, approximately 2,277 people are currently on waiting lists for transplants. Despite legislation stating that all adults are donors unless they formally opt out, health authorities report that half of potential organ donations are not realized because families oppose the procedure or are unaware of the deceased's wishes. Health Minister Ximena Chomali emphasized the need for a cultural shift rather than new public policies to address these waiting lists.

In Argentina, the challenges extend to pediatric care. Families navigating pediatric transplants face extreme emotional isolation and the logistical burden of traveling to major medical centers like Buenos Aires. Testimonies highlight a critical need for better psychological support for parents and increased public education regarding the donation process to combat myths and the profound loneliness experienced during the waiting period.
