Organ donations in Italy save multiple lives in Rho and Syracuse

Multiple organ and tissue donations have been successfully completed at hospitals in Rho and Syracuse, Italy, providing life-saving opportunities for numerous patients.

In Rho, a young man in his early twenties, who had previously expressed his wish to be a donor, passed away after being treated in intensive care. A complex 15-hour surgical operation involving teams from various Italian medical institutions, including the Policlinico, Niguarda, and Monzino, resulted in the donation of organs that saved six lives and improved the conditions of over ten people through tissue and component donations.

In Syracuse, the Umberto I Hospital conducted two multi-organ procurements within a single week. These procedures, managed by the Asp di Siracusa and involving specialists from Ismett in Palermo, provided livers, kidneys, and corneas for patients on transplant waiting lists. Since January, the Syracuse coordination center has facilitated five organ procurements and nine cornea procurements.
