Organic farming in Finland sees growing land area despite fewer farms

In Finland, the number of organic farms has decreased to approximately 3,850, representing 10 percent of the country's farms. However, the total organic farmland has grown to about 317,000 hectares, accounting for 14 percent of the total arable land. This trend indicates that while the number of individual farms is declining, the average size of organic farms has increased from nearly 57 hectares in 2017 to almost 83 hectares today.

North Karelia remains a leader in Finnish organic agriculture, with organic farms making up 14 percent of its total farms and nearly a quarter of its farmland being organic. Key organic products include organic milk, eggs, and oats.

Across the European Union, the organic market is valued at nearly 50 billion euros. Organic farmland in the EU has grown by over 80 percent in the last decade, now covering 11 percent of the union's total arable land. Austria leads the EU in organic land share at 27 percent, followed by Estonia at 23 percent and Greece at 22 percent. Regarding consumer spending, Denmark has the highest annual organic expenditure per capita at 373 euros, followed by Austria at 292 euros, while the average Finnish consumer spends approximately 60 euros per year on organic products.
