Organic food producers expand reach in German and Austrian markets
The organic food sector in Central Europe is seeing increased integration between producers and major retail markets. In Germany, the large-scale bakery Bio Breadness has invested over 40 million euros to double its production volume. The company aims to supply organic baked goods to conventional retailers and discounters by combining traditional methods, such as long dough fermentation, with modern automated technology. The facility produces approximately 40,000 tons of baked goods annually and holds certifications from Bioland, Naturland, Demeter, and Biokreis.
Simultaneously, organic farmers in Salzburg, Austria, are increasingly targeting the German market to expand their sales reach. To access major German retail chains, many Austrian farmers are seeking dual membership with both Bio Austria Salzburg and the German association Naturland. This strategic move allows farmers to meet specific German certification requirements. To facilitate this, the associations have implemented a system where membership fees are halved for those holding dual membership, making it more economically viable for farms to enter the German market.
