Orhei public transport fares could double to cover losses

The municipal enterpriseOrhei Transport’ has launched a public consultation regarding a potential doubling of public transport fares in Orhei, Moldova. The proposed increase would raise the cost per trip from 3 lei to 6 lei on local routes.

The enterprise cites significant financial losses and rising operating costs as the primary drivers for the adjustment. During the first seven months of the year, Orhei Transport reported revenues of approximately 8.1 million lei against expenses exceeding 11.5 million lei, resulting in a deficit of about 3.4 million lei. The calculated cost per trip has reached 5.94 lei.

Major expenditures include over 6.3 million lei for salaries, taxes, and contributions, 2.6 million lei for fuel, and significant amounts for spare parts and repairs due to an aging vehicle fleet. Under the new proposal, travel remains free for children under 7, while children aged 7 to 10 would continue to receive a 50% discount, paying 3 lei per trip. Public objections and proposals can be submitted until September 14.
