Orient Express began its inaugural journey on October 4, 1883
On October 4, 1883, the Orient Express completed its inaugural journey, departing from Paris and traveling through six countries toward Romania. Created by the French company Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL), the service became a global symbol of luxury and comfort, famously connecting Paris and Constantinople (Istanbul).
Over the decades, the route underwent numerous changes. Following the cessation of service to Istanbul in 1977, routes shifted toward Bucharest, Budapest, and eventually Vienna. The original service ceased operations in 2009, largely due to competition from high-speed rail and low-cost airlines.
Today, the legacy continues through the Venice Simplon Orient Express, a private venture by Belmond. This service utilizes original CIWL carriages from the 1920s and 1930s, offering luxury journeys such as London to Venice and reinstating portions of the historic route through cities like Ruse.
