Oriental hornets expand across Andalusia, threatening biodiversity

The oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) is expanding across the Andalusia region of Spain, with significant populations established in provinces such as Cádiz, Málaga, and Sevilla. First detected in Algeciras in 2018, researchers suggest the species may have been introduced via intense merchant traffic at the Port of Algeciras.

A project supported by the Junta de Andalucía reported a 30% increase in the species between 2023 and 2024. Experts express concern regarding the predator's impact on local biodiversity, specifically its predation of honeybees and other native invertebrates, which threatens both ecosystems and the apiculture industry.

While often confused with the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), the oriental hornet is a distinct species. It is characterized by a reddish or brown body with two prominent yellow stripes at the end of the abdomen and typically measures between 25 and 35 millimeters. Its ability to adapt to warm, dry Mediterranean climates and utilize urban environments for food and nesting has facilitated its rapid spread.
