Origin Energy begins decommissioning plans for Eraring power station

Origin Energy has commenced planning for the decommissioning of the Eraring power station, Australia’s largest coal-fired generator. The company recently submitted a scoping report to the NSW Department of Planning detailing the demolition and rehabilitation of site infrastructure, including the disposal of hazardous materials like coal ash and the management of cooling water systems.

Origin CEO Frank Calabria confirmed that the company remains focused on the scheduled closure of the 2,880-megawatt plant in April 2029. Despite recent operational challenges, including tube leaks that required maintenance and two units being offline, the company stated there are no changes to the exit timeline. The plant currently provides approximately 20 per cent of New South Wales’ power.

While the plant is running at lower capacity factors, Origin noted that starting the decommissioning process now is intended to minimize the gap between the end of coal-fired generation and the commencement of site rehabilitation. The decommissioning process will involve extensive community consultation before an Environmental Impact Statement is lodged.
