Origins of SARS-CoV-2 remain debated between lab leak and natural transmission
The origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus remain a subject of scientific and intelligence debate. While the exact cause of the pandemic has not been definitively proven, two primary hypotheses persist: zoonotic transmission from animals to humans and an accidental laboratory leak.
In June 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that available scientific evidence suggests a natural transmission from animals to humans is more likely. Conversely, the CIA reportedly estimated in January 2025 that a research-related origin was “more probable.”
Discussions continue regarding the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, where researchers worked on dangerous pathogens. Some perspectives suggest the virus may have been linked to gain-of-function research, while others emphasize the lack of direct evidence confirming a laboratory escape.
