Orihuela proposes new visual signage to improve cognitive accessibility

The Orihuela Family Department has introduced ‘PictOrihuela’, a municipal proposal designed to improve cognitive accessibility through enhanced visual signage and clearer communication in public spaces.

The initiative aims to create a common visual identity across municipal buildings, services, and communications. By implementing consistent pictograms, easy-to-read information, and digital visual supports, the project seeks to help individuals navigate locations such as reception desks, restrooms, and exits more easily. While the proposal focuses on children with autism and their families, it is also intended to assist elderly residents, visitors, and people living with dementia, intellectual disabilities, or visual impairments.

The project was developed following insights from the Family Observatory and a 2025 study regarding families with disabilities. Representatives from the ONCE agency and the Alzheimer’s association AFA Miguel Hernández participated in the presentation to ensure the new systems address the needs of those with both cognitive and visual disabilities. The department plans to share the proposal with other council departments and local business and hospitality associations.
