Oristano approves renovation project for Via Mazzini civic market
The Municipality of Oristano has received official approval for the executive project to renovate the civic market on Via Mazzini, a structure that has been closed for 10 years. The approval follows a successful service conference after previous setbacks.
Earlier this spring, the project faced opposition from the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape. The agency argued that the original demolition and modernization plans would harm the building’s historical architectural characteristics, specifically the central vaulted body and post-war elements like brise-soleil openings.
In response, designers—a group including Mediapolis Engineering, Dolmen, and the studio of engineer Costantino Soddu—revised the plans to adopt a more conservative approach. The updated project, which received favorable opinion in July, includes the renovation and expansion of the Via Mazzini structure while preserving the historic portal on Via Mariano IV and the Corriga fountain. The plan also incorporates new commercial spaces, green areas, and accessible pathways.
