Orizaba tigress death sparks allegations of wildlife mismanagement

A tigress named Tímida died on August 9, 2026, at the Citlaltépetl Environmental Management Unit (UMA) in Orizaba, Veracruz. The death has raised allegations of negligence and misinformation regarding the animal's care.

Local reports suggest that UMA coordinator Brenda Abaroa Ortiz provided inaccurate information regarding the tigress's age, claiming she was 21 years old, while previous records indicate she was likely between 13 and 15. Furthermore, while officials cited epilepsy as a factor, former UMA staff members claim the animal never suffered from the condition and that her convulsions were likely symptoms of organ failure that went untreated.

Prior to her death, documentation showed the tigress suffered from physical deterioration, difficulty walking, and significant weight loss. Critics have accused the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) of failing to take decisive action despite public warnings about the animal's condition.
