Orkan Viking drakkar arrives in Sines as part of Bátar expedition

The Orkan, a 28-meter Viking-inspired drakkar, is arriving in Sines, Portugal, as part of the Bátar 2026 Expedition. The vessel, constructed by the French collective Bátar, combines historical shipbuilding techniques with contemporary materials. It features a length of approximately 28 meters, a width of six meters, and a sail area of 184 square meters.

The stop in Sines serves as a logistical and technical stage for the crew, which is led by 26-year-old French captain Joanne Maurel. During the stay, the crew will conduct inspections, maintenance, and restock fuel and water to prepare for the next leg of the journey. Following its departure from Sines, the vessel is scheduled to head to Setúbal on August 20.

The broader expedition aims to preserve and transmit knowledge regarding traditional drakkar construction and navigation. The project involved over 500 volunteers in its creation. The Portuguese coastal route includes stops in Vila Real de Santo António, Sines, Setúbal, Lisbon, Peniche, and Porto between August 17 and 27, eventually preparing for a crossing toward New York.
