Orkan Viking-inspired ship to arrive in Vila Real de Santo António

The Orkan, a 28-meter vessel inspired by Viking ships, is scheduled to arrive in Vila Real de Santo António on August 17. The arrival is expected between 5:45 PM and 6:45 PM, followed by a reception ceremony involving local municipal representatives, maritime authorities, and the nautical community.

Built by the French collective Bátar, the ship combines historical shipbuilding techniques with contemporary solutions. It measures approximately 28 meters in length and six meters in width, featuring a sail area of 184 square meters. The vessel is designed for long-distance expeditions and the transmission of traditional navigation knowledge.

The stop in the Algarve marks the beginning of a journey along the Portuguese coast, with planned stops in Sines, Setúbal, Lisbon, Peniche, and Porto. This coastal voyage serves as preparation for a 2026 expedition intended to test the ship and crew for a planned North Atlantic crossing. The ultimate goal of the project is to sail the Orkan to New York via a northern route in 2027.
