Orlando Aguirre to step down as Costa Rica Supreme Court President

Orlando Aguirre has announced that he will not seek reelection as president of the Supreme Court of Justice in Costa Rica. This decision comes after a 37-year career as a magistrate, a tenure that began in 1976. Aguirre has served in various capacities, including as president of the Second Chamber from 1991 to 2022, before assuming the presidency of the Supreme Court in September 2022.

President Laura Fernández reacted to the announcement, stating she respects the decision but criticized the lack of coordination between the Executive and Judicial branches during Aguirre's term. Fernández noted that her previous attempts to establish a joint working agenda to address national security and impunity issues were met with little response. She emphasized that the next president of the Judicial Power must demonstrate a willingness to work collaboratively with the Executive and Legislative branches.
