Orlando City beats Monterrey 2-1 in Leagues Cup, Griezmann scores
Orlando City defeated Mexican side CF Monterrey 2-1 in the opening round of the Leagues Cup at the Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando. Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a left‑foot strike, and later earned a penalty that Tyrese Spicer converted to make it 2-0.
Spicer also provided the assist for Griezmann’s goal and was a constant threat on the wing, earning a penalty after being fouled by defender Gerardo Arteaga. The French forward handed the spot‑kick to Spicer, who calmly scored from the spot. Monterrey pulled one back in stoppage time through Hugo Cuypers, but the result stood.
The match was attended by more than 25,000 fans, and interim coach Martin Perelman praised the team’s effort and the atmosphere. Griezmann was named the match MVP for his goal, assist and leadership on and off the field.
