Orlando Pirates coach explains Thalente Mbatha’s absence

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has clarified why midfielder Thalente Mbatha was absent from the squad during the team’s 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy at the Orlando Amstel Arena.

Following a recent appearance in the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns, Mbatha’s absence from the Betway Premiership match raised questions. Ouaddou explained that the decision was a precautionary measure to protect the player as he continues his recovery from knee surgery. The midfielder had previously undergone surgery after returning from national team duty, which also impacted his availability for the 2027 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ouaddou expressed surprise and admiration for Mbatha’s high-level performance in the recent cup final despite his lengthy rehabilitation. To avoid further injury risks, the coaching staff is managing his fitness carefully. Mbatha is expected to potentially feature in the upcoming CAF Champions League second qualifying round match against African Stars in Namibia.
