ORLEN discovers significantly larger gas reserves in Norway
ORLEN Upstream Norway, in partnership with Equinor, DNO, and Wellesley Petroleum, has completed exploratory drilling at the Aphrodite field on the North Sea. The results indicate that the field's recoverable resources are more than twice the original estimates.
Previously, the total recoverable resources were estimated at approximately 50 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe). New data from the operator, Equinor, suggests a much wider range of 77 to 180 million boe, with an average estimate of 128 million boe. For ORLEN, which holds a 25 percent stake acquired from Vår Energi, this increases its share from roughly 12 million boe to over 32 million boe, including more than 4 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
The Aphrodite field is considered an unconventional deposit that was first drilled nearly 20 years ago. At that time, geological conditions and technological limitations made its economic exploitation uncertain. Recent advancements in upstream engineering technologies allowed the partners to return to the project to confirm additional volumes and determine the best method for development. The field also contains oil and other hydrocarbons.
