Orlen faces stock decline and rising refinery margins
Orlen's stock has experienced a decline of over 10% from its historical peak of 164.12 PLN, with technical analysts identifying 145 PLN as a key support level. This downward pressure is attributed to volatility in the oil market and fluctuations in wholesale fuel prices. To mitigate supply disruptions, particularly from Saudi Arabia, the company reported the purchase of 16 additional oil cargoes.
Regarding profitability, Orlen's refinery margin rose to 14.5 USD per barrel in the second quarter of 2026, up from 12.9 USD in the first quarter. CEO Ireneusz Fąfara noted that this increase is driven by the global diesel market, where prices are rising faster than crude oil. He cautioned that limiting fuel prices in Poland could impact diesel imports and potentially lead to shortages.
Wojciech Balczun, Minister of State Assets, stated that refinery margins are objective market indicators influenced by global conditions, including ongoing conflicts. He noted that while Orlen remains a significant player, the Polish market structure has changed following previous acquisitions and integrations involving Lotos and the Gdańsk Refinery.
