Orlen secures biofuel certification for Płock refinery

Orlen has secured certification under the Oil and Gas Institute’s KZR INiG sustainability scheme for coprocessing biobased feedstocks at its Płock refinery in Poland. This certification, recognized by the European Commission, confirms that the company’s renewable feedstocks and processing methods comply with European Union requirements.

The certification enables Orlen to expand its biofuel component production and count these outputs toward EU renewable energy targets for transport. By utilizing existing refinery units for cohydrotreatment—processing biobased materials alongside conventional fossil streams—the company can increase the renewable content of its fuels without constructing new production units.

Currently, the refinery can process approximately 100,000 metric tons of biobased feedstocks annually, representing up to 3.5 percent of the feed. These materials include vegetable oils such as rapeseed oil and used cooking oils. Orlen plans to increase this capacity to approximately 150,000 tons through planned upgrades and intends to expand certification to include additional feedstocks like linseed and mustard.
