Ornamibo landfill fire triggers emergency response in Suriname
Firefighters are battling a major blaze at the Ornamibo landfill in Suriname, utilizing water cannons to combat the flames. To sustain the effort, water is being pumped directly from the Parakreek to the fire sites. Acting Director Anwar Moenne stated that personnel are working intensely to bring the situation under control, noting that the fire department is currently under significant pressure due to multiple simultaneous forest and grass fires in the region.
District Commissioner Ernesto Muller of Wanica South-East has called for a structural solution to the recurring fires and the resulting heavy smoke nuisance. Muller is collaborating with Moenne and other authorities to determine long-term preventative measures. Residents in the vicinity have been advised to keep windows and doors closed to limit exposure to smoke.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. Moenne has not ruled out arson, noting that the fire originated in an area where spontaneous combustion is unusual. The recurring nature of these incidents has previously caused health complaints among firefighters and significant disruption to the local community.
