ORP Wicher frigate scheduled for christening and launch in Gdynia

The ORP Wicher, the first of three modern multi-role frigates under Poland's "Miecznik" program, is scheduled for its christening and launch at the PGZ Stocznia Wojenna in Gdynia. The christening ceremony is set for Wednesday, August 12, followed by the launching operation on Thursday, August 13.

The ORP Wicher is a 6,000-ton vessel based on the British Arrowhead 140 design. Due to its construction method, the launch will involve a complex engineering operation using a semi-submersible barge to move the hull from the production hall to the water. Once launched, the vessel will undergo outfitting, including the installation of weaponry and cabling, starting around August 17.

The Miecznik program is a major modernization effort for the Polish Navy, valued at over 15 billion PLN, intended to replace aging Oliver Hazard Perry-class ships. In addition to ORP Wicher, the program includes the construction of ORP Burza and ORP Huragan. The ORP Wicher is expected to begin sea trials in late 2028 and enter active service by the end of 2029. The project involves international partners including Babcock, Thales, MBDA, Lockheed Martin, Kongsberg, and Leonardo.
