Orquesta de Extremadura faces labor disputes amid expansion plans
The Orquesta de Extremadura (OEx) is entering a new phase involving both internal labor disputes and strategic expansion plans. During a session in the Assembly, the PSOE party raised concerns regarding management and labor issues, specifically highlighting stress-related sick leaves and disciplinary sanctions. In response, the Junta de Extremadura maintained that the situation is not exceptional and comparable to other public entities.
To enhance artistic quality, the Secretary General of Culture, José Luis Gil Soto, announced plans to expand the orchestra's staff by hiring new musicians, primarily string players. The strategic roadmap includes reviving opera performances, introducing cycles for young performers, and expanding the orchestra's reach.
Future objectives involve bringing performances to Extremaduran towns that have not hosted the ensemble in decades, as well as summer concerts in historic cathedrals. Additionally, the orchestra aims to increase its presence outside the region by performing in Madrid and various Spanish festivals, while strengthening collaborations with Portuguese institutions starting in 2027.
